Anabeira Ayala
Born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico in 1985, Anabeira Ayala began her music and violin studies at the age of seven. She initiated her classical ballet studies at Net Dance Studio in Bayamón with Luis Iván Cordero, Irma Cordero, Zaida Torres and Vivian Rivera. She participated in classes at the Ballet Royal de Puerto Rico and the Ballet Concierto de Puerto Rico as an exchange program.
During four consecutive years, through selection, she attended the Eglevsky Ballet Summer Workshop in New York, with great teachers such as Jane Miller, Luba Gulayeva, Sergey Kozadayev, Jean Paul Commelin, George Callahan, Michael Vernon, among others, thanks in part to the Ballet Pitirre scholarship program directed by Elisabeth Calero. In 2002, she entered the Drama Department at the University of Rio Piedras, where she enriched her training with teachers such as Petra Bravo, Teófilo Torres, Rosabel Otón, Miguel Vando, “Checo” Cuevas, Tony Fernández and Lowell Fiet. She also studied a bachelor’s degree in history of the Americas. She has excelled as a teacher of Theater Arts and Dance in private schools, as well as in community theater. Ayala began directing theater at the university with her staging of the Auto de los Reyes Magos, which was part of her Spanish Literature course and was presented at the theater of the University of Puerto Rico, Bayamón campus. She directed several children plays and musicals for elementary level students, including several of her own authorship: Restaurante A mi antojo Bar and Grill (2005), I’m on my way Home (2008) and Pa’la escuela despeina’o (2010).
In 2008, she presented her first ballet: “Zafiro en el mundo de los Gunguios” (Sapphire in the World of the Gunguios) at the Braulio Castillo Theater in Bayamón. In 2009, she presented “Pasos y Versos” (Steps and Verses) at the Mazo Rivera in Toa Alta; she had the participation of young Puerto Rican poets with the purpose of raising funds for the first students admitted to the Eglevsky Ballet seminary in New York.
During the summer of 2009, she was part of the faculty of the Eglevsky Ballet seminary along with great teachers such as Ali Pourfarokh, Tuvshin Bold, Kristen McGrew, Vitaly Verterich, among others. In April 2010, she presented her version of Prokoviev’s ballet Cinderella, with the collaboration of the Theater of the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. This was done in order to raise funds to take seven of her students who were admitted to the Eglevsky Ballet Workshop 2010, where she was again part of the faculty of said seminar.
In January 2012. Anabeira Ayala worked on the staging of The Nutcracker, Nureyev's version, with the purpose of raising funds for the formation of the Momentum Workshop, thanks to the collaboration of the Theater of the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras.
She has stood out as a judge in different dance competitions. She has trained dancers for competition, obtaining excellent results in the positions of third, second and first place consecutively. She obtained 2nd place in the World Latin Dance Cup 2014 in the Same Gender Couples category. Ayala has excelled in Salsa dancing, as a choreographer and dancer, sharing the stage with great artists such as Ismael Miranda, Luis Enrique, Victor Manuel, Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz, Yolanda Rivera, La India, among others. She stands out as a workshop facilitator in international and local salsa congresses.
She promoted a proposal for Fine Arts and Salsa in Toa Alta, obtaining the approval of Mayor Clemente Agosto, a program that she currently directs. She works there teaching Ballet, Modern Dance, Jazz and Acting to young people and children from Toa Alta and is based at the Maso Rivera Theater in Toa Alta. In addition, she oversees the artistic direction of Artífice Dance Studio, being the teacher of Ballet, Modern Dance, Contemporary Dance and Acting; where she has directed and created choreographies for more than 48 dance recitals. She has participated as a choreographer in the 2014-2022 International Dance Festival of the Puerto Rico Institute of Culture based at the Fine Arts Center in Santurce.
Anabeira is a true believer in continuing education and professional development, which is why she maintains her training with teacher and mentor María Cristina Palacios of the Ballet of Camaguey (Cuba) in the Cuban method among other independent classes and workshops at The Ailey School, Broadway Dance Center, among others. Besides dance instruction Ayala is passionate about teaching, she has 5 years of experience as Theater and Conversational English Teacher in the private school Academia Discipulos de Cristo. Anabeira holds a Master degree in Education with a concentration in E-Learning and currently studies a Master in Bussiness Administration with Human Resources.
